Classification of Dryers.

 

Definition

  • Drying is defined as the removal of liquid from a product usually with application of heat.

  • Equipment used for the purpose of drying are called “Dryers”.

Classification of Dryers.

  1. Static Bed Dryer: 

    • In this type of dryers, there is no relative movement among the solid particles being dried but there can be bulk motion of the entire drying mass. 

    • E.g. Tray dryer, freeze dryer, etc.

  2. Moving Bed Dryers: 

    • In this type of dryers, the drying particles are partially separated so that they flow over each other.

    • E.g. Drum dryer

  3. Fluidized bed dryer: 

    • In this type of dryers, solid particles are partially suspended in an upward-moving gas stream i.e. the particles are in a fluidized state. 

    • E.g. Fluidized Bed Dryer (FBD).

  4. Pneumatic dryer: 

    • In this type of dryers, the drying particles are entrained and conveyed in a high-velocity gas stream.

    • Spray Dryer.
